OL2000: (IMO) Cannot Start Outlook in IMAP Inbox Folder (195069)

SYMPTOMS

You cannot choose to start Outlook in an Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) message folder Inbox.

CAUSE

An IMAP folder cannot act as the default message store.

RESOLUTION

Change the Outlook Today screen to display the IMAP Inbox message information, and then choose the option to start Outlook in Outlook Today.

-or-

Create a shortcut to the Inbox of the IMAP folder on your desktop, and then start Outlook from this shortcut.

Outlook Today can display the number of unread messages in selected folders and you can choose to start with that screen displayed.

To Change the Outlook Today Screen

  1. Click to select Outlook Today from the Folder list.
  2. Click to select the Customize Outlook Today option.
  3. In the Startup section, click to select, "When starting, go directly to Outlook Today."
  4. In the Messages section, click Choose Folders.
  5. Click to select the Inbox folder of the IMAP server, and then click OK.
  6. Click Save Changes.

Create a Shortcut to the Inbox of Your IMAP Account

  1. Right-click an unused area on your desktop, point to New, and then click Shortcut.
  2. In the Command Line box, type Outlook://MyAccount/Inbox where MyAccount represents the friendly name of your IMAP account as it appears in the Accounts list. Click Next.
  3. Type a name for the shortcut such as IMAP-Inbox, and then click Finish.
You can create a shortcut on your desktop to start Outlook with any folder displayed.

To Create a Shortcut to the IMAP Folder

  1. Size your Outlook window so that the desktop is visible in the background.
  2. Click the IMAP Inbox folder to select it, and then drag it to the desktop. This creates a shortcut on the desktop.
  3. To start Outlook in the IMAP folder, double-click the new shortcut on the desktop.
NOTE: The Outlook bar and the Folder list will not be displayed when starting with this shortcut.
