PRB: File Copy Error Messages Using Update.exe with Service Pack 4 (194986)

SYMPTOMS

When you install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 using a Cmdlines.txt file and Update.exe, you may receive file copy error messages for the following files:

Appserver.class
Context.class
Imtxas.class
Objectcontent.class
Securityproperty.class

CAUSE

Only files with 8.3 file names can be copied using a Cmdlines.txt file and Update.exe.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use the compressed Sp4i386.exe file from the Service Pack 4 CD-ROM, or SP4I386.EXE from the standard download from the Microsoft Web site with the Setup options you want. STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

To create an unattended installation of Service Pack 4:

  1. In the $OEM$ folder, create an SP4 folder.
  2. Copy the Sp4i386.exe to the SP4 folder.
  3. In your Unattend.txt file, make sure you have the following lines:
          [Unattended]
          OemPreinstall = yes
  4. Create a Cmdlines.txt file in your $OEM$ folder that contains the following lines:
          [Commands]
          ".\sp4\sp4i386.exe -z -u"
