The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Project 98 for Windows
This article was previously published under Q194966 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Windows 95/98, when you double-click to open a Microsoft
Project 98 file in Windows Explorer, My Computer or on your Desktop, you
may receive the following error message:
The command could not be completed successfully.
Try one of the following:
- Check that the argument value is correct.
- If a DDE command caused the message, check the other program to see
why Microsoft Project is unable to communicate with it.
- The macro may have completed a Find operation, and this message may
simply be telling you that the operation is finished.
After receiving this message, the project may or may not open. If the
project does open, it may be opened read-only.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs when you open a Microsoft Project 98 file in Windows
Explorer, My Computer or on your desktop and the total number of characters
in the path and file name is greater than 245.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, either open the project from within Microsoft
Project 98 or reduce the total number of characters in the path and file
name to be 245 or fewer.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
