ActiveSync Service Manager Ignores .mdb and .cdb Files (194725)

SYMPTOMS

After you attempt to synchronize a Microsoft Access (.mdb) or Microsoft Pocket Access (.cdb) file using Microsoft ActiveSync Service Manager, there may be no tables in the Icatalog.cdb file.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the file synchronization service does not synchronize .mdb and .cdb files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use the table synchronization service. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Disconnect your mobile device from your desktop computer.
  2. On your desktop computer, click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Windows CE Services, and then click Mobile Devices.
  3. Click your mobile device, and then click ActiveSync Options on the Tools menu.
  4. Click Table, and then click OK. Windows CE Services initializes synchronization, but actual synchronization does not occur.
  5. On the Tools menu, click ActiveSync Options.
  6. Click Table, and then click Options.
  7. Click Add, and and then click the database file you want. To synchronize information other than Access database information, click ODBC Database in the File Of Type list. Note that an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) database must already be set up as a data source.
  8. Click Open. Windows CE Services copies the database information to the My Documents folder on your mobile device. Database information is then synchronized during ActiveSync, or whenever you click Synchronize Now.


To resolve this behavior when using ActiveSync 3.x, follow these steps:

  1. Connect the mobile device to the desktop and synchronize
    On the Desktop Computer go to Start Programs, choose Microsoft ActiveSync, allow the synchronization to complete.
  2. Click Tools, Options, select the "Pocket Access" option under the Mobile devices column. Click Settings.
  3. Click Add, and and then click the database file you want to use. To synchronize information other than Access database information, click ODBC Database in the File Of Type list. Note that an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) database must already be set up as a data source.
  4. Click Open. Windows CE Services will copy the database information to the My Documents folder on your mobile device.
  5. You can at this point choose the tables that yoou want synchronized. click OK. Database information is then synchronized during ActiveSync, or whenever you click Synchronize Now.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows CE Services version 2.2

MORE INFORMATION

The Icatalog.cdb file is created after file synchronization and is stored in the Synchronized Files folder.
