SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows Me on a computer participating on a Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)-based network, you may receive the following error message when you attempt to log on to the network:
Invalid VxD dynamic link call from VNBT(01) 0000F4aa. This was called from VTDI, service E

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Vtdi.386 file is in a folder other than the Windows\System folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type "vtdi.386" (without quotation marks), and then click Find Now.
  3. In the list of found files, right-click a Vtdi.386 file that is not in the Windows\System folder, and then click Rename.
  4. Type a new name for the Vtdi.386 file (such as Vtdi.xxx), and then press ENTER.
  5. Repeat steps 3-4 for each Vtdi.386 file that is not in the Windows\System folder.
  6. Quit the Find tool, and then restart your computer.
