Plus! 98: Computer Hangs When You Start Golf Lite (194436)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Golf Lite or Microsoft Golf 1998 Edition, you may encounter one of the following symptoms:

  • Your computer may stop responding (hang).
  • You may receive a dialog box containing no text. When you click Close, your computer may stop responding (hang).
  • You may receive either of the following error messages:
    • Msgolf98 caused an invalid page fault in module Version.dll.
    • Msgolf98 caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll.
    When you click Close, your computer may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the MediaView files installed on your computer are missing or damaged, or if the file versions are mismatched.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove and then reinstall Golf Lite. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click Microsoft Plus! 98, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. Click Add/Remove, and then click Next.
  5. Click to clear the Golf Lite check box, and then click Next.
  6. Click Next, click Finish, and then click OK.
  7. Close Control Panel.
  8. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
  9. In the Named box, type mv*20n.*, and then click Find Now.
  10. In the list of found files, right-click the Mvbk20n.dll file located in the Windows\System folder, and then click Rename.
  11. Press the END key.
  12. Type .disable, and then press ENTER.
  13. Repeat steps 10-12 to rename the following files.

    NOTE: Make sure you rename only the files located in the Windows\System folder.
    • Mvcl20n.dll
    • Mvmg20n.dll
    • Mvoc20n.ocx
    • Mvsr20n.dll
    • Mvtl20n.dll
    • Mvut20n.dll
  14. Insert the Microsoft Plus! 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the Plus! 98 CD-ROM to prevent the Plus! 98 CD-ROM from starting automatically.
  15. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  16. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  17. Click Microsoft Plus! 98, and then click Add/Remove.
  18. Click Add/Remove, and then click Next.
  19. Click to select the Golf Lite check box, and then click Next.
  20. Click Next, click Finish, and then click OK.
