SUMMARY

If you encounter a problem when you try to install one of the programs listed at the beginning of this article, you can use Safe mode in Microsoft Windows to troubleshoot the problem.

This article describes how to start your computer in Safe mode, and how to copy the program's CD-ROM contents to the hard disk so you can install the program when the computer is running in Safe mode.

MORE INFORMATION

To copy the contents of the program's CD-ROM to the hard disk you must have approximately 75 MB of available hard-disk space in addition to the space required to install the program.

NOTE: This installation process does not enable you to run the program without the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. Templates and clipart remain on the program's CD-ROM. This installation process is provided only to help you troubleshoot Setup problems.

Copying CD-ROM Contents to the Hard Disk

The first step to install the program when Windows is running in Safe mode is to copy the program's CD-ROM contents to the hard disk. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Follow these steps to create a new folder on the hard disk:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
    2. In the All Folders pane, click a hard disk drive that contains adequate available hard-disk space.
    3. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.
    4. Type a name for the folder, and then press ENTER.
  2. Insert the program's CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. When you insert the CD-ROM, hold down the SHIFT key to prevent Setup from starting automatically.
  3. In Windows Explorer, click the CD-ROM drive that contains the program's CD-ROM, and then double-click the Mhp folder.
  4. On the View menu, click Options or Folder Options.
  5. On the View tab, click Show All Files, and then click OK.

NOTE: If you are using Microsoft Windows 98 or Internet Explorer 4.0 Desktop Update, click Show All Files under Hidden Files in the Advanced Settings box, and then click OK.
  6. Copy each of the files listed in the Mhp folder to the folder you created in step 1. You can distinguish files from folders because folders are represented by yellow folder icons. To copy the files, follow these steps:
    1. Click a file in the Mhp folder, and then press and hold down the CTRL key as you click each of the remaining files in the Mhp folder.
    2. When you finish selecting all the files in the Mhp folder, on the Edit menu, click Copy.
    3. Open the folder you created in step 1.
    4. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
  7. Copy the following folders from the CD-ROM to the folder you created in step 1:

    Mhp\Fonts
    Mhp\Program
    Mhp\Shared
    Mhp\System

To copy these folders, use the following steps:
    1. Click one of the folders listed above, and then press and hold down the CTRL key as you click the remaining three folders.
    2. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
    3. Open the folder you created in step 1.
    4. On the Edit menu, click Paste.

Restarting the Computer in Safe Mode and then Running Setup

The next step to install the program in Safe mode is to restart your computer in Safe mode, and then run Setup from the hard disk. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Follow these steps to start Windows in Safe mode:
    1. Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
    2. Click Restart The Computer, and then click OK.
    3. If you are using a Microsoft Windows 95-based computer, press the F5 key when you see the "Starting Windows 95" message. If you are using a Windows 98-based computer, when your computer restarts, press down and hold the SHIFT key until Windows 98 starts in Safe mode.
    4. When Windows starts in Safe mode, click OK.
  2. Open the folder you created on the hard disk in step 1 of the "Copying CD-ROM Contents to the Hard Disk" method.
  3. Double-click the Mhpstp.exe file.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to install the program.
  5. When you finish installing the program, restart your computer normally (not in Safe mode).

NOTE: You must restart your computer before you attempt to run the program because Safe mode uses a color depth setting of only 16 colors, and you cannot access the CD-ROM drive.
