Small Business Server Will Not Allow Bump Pack to Be Added (194335)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0a
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0

This article was previously published under Q194335

SYMPTOMS

At any time while you attempt to add a Small Business Server (SBS) client bump pack, you may encounter the following message:
The disk has already been used to add client licenses.
You will not be able to proceed and add the license increment to the Small Business Server computer.

CAUSE

This error message is generated when a client bump pack has either become corrupted or used out of order. Using the bump pack out of order will cause the disk to be rewritten inadvertently and to be unusable.

RESOLUTION

Take the following steps to resolve this issue:
  1. Verify that the disk is not write-protected. The installation procedure of the disk writes licensing information back to the disk.
  2. Delete the Temp directory and re-create it. Verify with the customer that any critical data does not reside within the Temp directory. This step is to ensure that corruption does not reside in the directory the bump pack uses for temporary storage.
  3. Verify with the customer that the disks were used in the proper order. A 10-15 bump pack used to upgrade from 5-10 users will cause the 5-10 bump pack to be unusable. If this was the cause, a new bump pack must be sent to the customer. The full procedure for replacing SBS Client Add Packs can be found in the following article:
