This article was previously published under Q194181 SYMPTOMS
When you click to clear the Load= or Run= check box on the Win.ini tab or
the Load Startup Group Items check box on the General tab in the System
Configuration Utility (Msconfig.exe), programs may still be run when you
start Windows 98.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the Win.ini file contains multiple "load=" or
"run=" lines. The System Configuration Utility processes only the first
"load=" and "run=" line in the Win.ini file.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run, type "win.ini" (without quotation marks) in the
Open box, and then click OK.
- For each additional "load=" and "run=" line in the [Windows] section,
cut the text on the right of the equal sign (=) and paste it on the
end of the first "load=" or "run=" line.
NOTE: Be sure to separate each entry on the "load=" and "run=" line
with a space.
- For information about how to cut and paste in Windows 98, click Start,
click Help, click the Index tab, type "cutting" (without quotation
marks), and then double-click the "Cutting, Pasting" topic.
- Delete each additional "load=" and "run=" line.
- Close the Win.ini file.
MORE INFORMATION
The System Configuration Utility also does not list static virtual device
drivers (VxDs).
