If you install Windows 98 on a portable computer with no floppy disk
drive, you may be prompted to create a Windows 98 Startup disk in
nonexistent drive A.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the floppy disk controller is not disabled in
your computer's basic input/output system (BIOS).
RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods:
Method 1
Disable the floppy disk controller in the computer's BIOS before running
Setup. For information about how to do so, refer to the documentation
included with your computer or contact the manufacturer.
Method 2
Disable the floppy disk controller in Device Manager. To do so, follow
these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click System, click the Device Manager tab, and then double-
click the Floppy Disk Controllers branch to expand it.
- Click the floppy disk controller, click Properties, and then click the
Disable In This Hardware Profile check box to select it.
NOTE: If more than one floppy disk controller is listed, repeat this
step for each device listed.
- Click OK, click Close, and then click Yes if you are prompted to
restart your computer.
