SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to restart your computer in MS-DOS mode, you may receive the following error message:
Cannot find the file 'C:\Windows\Exit to Dos.pif'.
Make sure the file exists on your system and that the path name and filenames are correct.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the "Exit to Dos.pif" file in the Windows folder is damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type "exitto~1.pif" (without quotation marks), and then click Find Now.
  3. In the list of found files, right-click the "Exit to Dos.pif" file, and then click Delete.
  4. Quit the Find tool.
  5. Click Start, click Shut Down, click Restart In MS-DOS Mode, and then click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

The "Exit to Dos.pif" file is rebuilt every time you restart your computer in MS-DOS mode. If the "Exit to Dos.pif" file is damaged, Windows is unable to rebuild it.
