TCP/IP Host Name Resolution Takes a Long Time on PPTP Connection (193878)

SYMPTOMS

A Windows 95 or Windows 98 client may experience delays resolving Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) host names on a Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) connection.

CAUSE

Although the client computer may not be able to contact the Point-to-Point (PPP) Domain Name Service (DNS) servers, Windows waits 75 or more seconds for the PPP servers to time out.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next service pack that contains this fix.

The Winsock 2 component has been modified so that a given name lookup times out in 15 seconds (down from 75 seconds). The client computer no longer places single-label queries on the wire and properly caches lookups.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was corrected in Windows 98 Second Edition.
