This article was previously published under Q193794 SYMPTOMS
After you change your screen saver, your previous screen saver may still
be used when your computer is idle for the appropriate amount of time. If
you then view the Screen Saver tab in the Display tool in Control Panel,
your previous screen saver selection is visible instead of your new screen
saver selection.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the System.ini file has been marked with the
Read Only attribute.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, remove the Read Only attribute from the System.ini
file. To do so, use the following steps:
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or folders.
- In the Named box, type "system.ini" (without quotation marks), and then
click Find Now.
- Right-click the System.ini file located in the Windows folder, and then
click Properties.
- Click the Read Only check box to clear it, click OK, and then quit the
Find tool.
MORE INFORMATION
When you change a screen saver, the change is recorded in the System.ini
file in the [Boot] section on the "scrnsave.exe=" line.
