XCON: MTA Stops Processing Messages When One Network Link Fails (193760)

SYMPTOMS

If the network link to a remote site fails on a server with links to multiple remote sites using X.400 Connectors, the message transfer agent (MTA) may stop processing messages to all remote sites.

CAUSE

The problem is due to the synchronous nature of the Microsoft Exchange MTA in versions 4.0 and 5.0.

RESOLUTION

Exchange Server 4.0

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but has not been fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server versions 4.0 and 5.0.
