WD98: Error When Opening File with Link to Graphic on Flop (193750)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q193750

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition, a graphic linked to a floppy disk, but not actually saved in the document, may not load when you reopen the document. Instead, the picture is missing and replaced with a placeholder of a red square, blue triangle, and green circle.

WORKAROUND

Save the graphic within the document rather than linking to a floppy disk to prevent the link from being broken.

RESOLUTION

To allow the link to work properly, delete the colon in the INCLUDEPICTURE link and follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Preferences, and click the View tab. (Or you can press OPTION+F9).
  2. Click to select the Field codes option under Show, and click OK.
  3. Place your cursor in front of the three colons, as in this example:

    {INCLUDEPICTURE "<cursor here>:::FloppyDisk:Pictures:Image.jpeg" \* MERGEFORMAT \d}

  4. Press the Delete key on the keyboard 3 times.

    After deleting the colons, the link should appear as this:

    {INCLUDEPICTURE "FloppyDisk:Pictures:Image.jpeg" \* MERGEFORMAT \d}

  5. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  6. Press F9 to update the fields.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
