This article was previously published under Q193710

SYMPTOMS

Using ? and * inside a word does not return a list of suggested alternate spellings.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Word.

MORE INFORMATION

In earlier versions of Word, the wild card characters can be substituted inside words to represent unknown letters. The spelling checker offers a list of suggestions that contain spellings using alternate characters at those locations. This functionality was dropped in Office 2000.

NOTE: The "Always suggest corrections" check box (on the Tools menu, point to Options, and click the Spelling & Grammar tab) must be selected for earlier versions to display this functionality.
