SYMPTOMS

If you use the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) to view the information of a computer that contains more than 256 characters in its DNS name, an access violation error occurs.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Internet Information Server version 4.0. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition Service Pack 4.

MORE INFORMATION

MMC successfully connects to the computer, but when the plus sign next to the computer name is clicked in the scope pane of the MMC, the access violation occurs.
