SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows 98, you may be unable to change your display settings to a resolution that is higher than 640 X 480 with 16 colors. Also, if you view the Settings tab in the Display tool in Control Panel, the tool may report that you have an unknown monitor on an unknown device. If you then view Display Adapter properties in the Device Manager tool, it may report that a Microsoft Windows 3.1 driver is in use.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you are using an Avance Logic Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) video adapter. Windows 98 does not include drivers for this video adapter, so when Setup detects this adapter, it installs a standard VGA driver, and this driver is not capable of displaying a resolution that is higher than 640X480 with 16 colors.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact Avance Logic to inquire about the availability of a video adapter driver to resolve this issue.
