PRJ98: An Unexpected Error Has Occurred When Using Office Binder (193308)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Office Binder, when you click a hyperlink in a Microsoft Project 98 project, you may receive the following message:
Another person is working on this binder. Do you want to open this binder as read only?
Also, depending on the version of Windows you are using, you may experience the following additional symptoms.

Windows NT

When you click OK or Cancel on the initial message, you may receive the following error message:
An unexpected error has occurred.

Windows 95/98

If you click OK on the initial message, a second instance (a read-only copy) of the binder may open.

If you click Cancel on the initial message, you may receive the following error message:
An unexpected error has occurred.
Additional actions may cause the program to stop responding, or display additional error messages.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when both of the following conditions are true:

  • Your project is a section contained within a Microsoft Office Binder.
  • Your hyperlink references a section within the Binder that has been deleted or renamed.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the method appropriate for your situation:

If the section referenced by the hyperlink has been deleted, delete the hyperlink. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Select the task that has the hyperlink that you want to delete.
  2. On the Insert menu, click Hyperlink.
  3. Click Remove Link.

If the section referenced by the hyperlink has been renamed, edit the hyperlink to reflect the new name. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Select the task that has the hyperlink that you want to edit.
  2. On the Insert menu, click Hyperlink.
  3. In the Link To File Or URL box, change the reference to reflect the renamed section.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
