PRJ98: Reinstalling Project Doesn't Install the Global.MPT File (193299)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q193299

SYMPTOMS

When you run Setup for Microsoft Project 98, and select the Reinstall option, the Global.mpt file is not installed. When you start Microsoft Project 98 after reinstalling, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Project could not open Global.MPT.

A new Global.MPT will be created that does not include some of the views and macros that were in the original Global.MPT.

To restore the Global.MPT, quit Microsoft Project, copy Backup.MPT, and then restart Microsoft Project.
NOTE: If you have an existing installation of Microsoft Project 98, Setup runs in maintenance mode, and Reinstall is one of the options available.

CAUSE

Microsoft Project 98 Setup does not install the Global.mpt file during a reinstallation if the Global.mpt file is missing from the installation destination.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, create a new Global.mpt file, based on the Backup.mpt file, by following these steps:

Deleting the Global.mpt File

If you receive the error message described in the "Symptoms" section, you need to first delete the Global.mpt file that was created. To delete the Global.mpt file, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the Global.mpt file. This file is located in the same folder as the Microsoft Project program file (Winproj.exe). The default location is:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Global.mpt

  2. In Windows Explorer, click to select the Global.mpt file.
  3. On the File menu, click Delete.

Creating a New Global.mpt File

To create a new Global.mpt file, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the Backup.mpt file. This file is located in the same folder as the Microsoft Project program file (Winproj.exe). The default location is:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Backup.mpt

  2. In Windows Explorer, click to select the Backup.mpt file.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
  5. Select the new file (which is called "Copy of Backup.MPT").
  6. On the File menu, click Rename and rename the file Global.MPT.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When performing a non-maintenance mode installation, if the Global.mpt file already exists in the installation destination, Setup will not replace it. Because you can customize the Global.mpt file, Microsoft Project Setup avoids doing anything to this file that could remove your customizations.
