The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 1.0
  • the operating system: Microsoft Windows 98

This article was previously published under Q193072

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to play a MIDI file through the analog speakers attached to the sound card installed in your computer, you may hear the music playback through the Digital Sound System 80 (DSS80) speakers attached to the Universal Serial Bus (USB) port on the computer.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if both of the following conditions are true:

  • You configure the computer to use the DSS80 as the preferred playback device, play a MIDI file over the DSS80 speakers, and then reconfigure the computer to use your sound card as the preferred playback device.
  • Your sound card driver does not conform to the Windows Driver Model specification for Windows 98.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, unplug the DSS80 speakers from the USB port on the computer.

To resolve this issue, contact your sound card manufacturer to inquire if an updated driver is available for your sound card that conforms to the Windows Driver Model specification for Windows 98.

MORE INFORMATION

To determine if you are playing digital audio over the USB port, use the Digital Audio Indicator located in the lower-right corner of the Equalizer Control window.
