WD95: Convert File Dialog Box Defaults to Text Only During File Open (192882)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95 7.0a

This article was previously published under Q192882

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 7.0, when you try to open a file in another format, such as Word 97 format, you receive the Convert File dialog box with Text Only selected

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the name of the file you are trying to open contains extra periods ("."), A.Test.doc for example.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use hyphens (dashes "-") or underscores ("_") instead of periods in the file name.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When you receive the Convert File dialog box, if you select the correct file format, Word will open the file correctly without changing the file name.

However, if you select Text Only, all formatting will be lost, and some unwanted text and symbols may appear in the document. At this point, closing the file without saving preserves the original formatting.
