ALT+A May Not Work Correctly in Display Property Settings (192755)

SYMPTOMS

If you click the Settings tab in Display properties, click Advanced, and then press ALT+A, either of the following symptoms may occur:

  • The "Apply the new color settings without restarting" option receives the focus (the dotted-line box), but is not selected.
  • The Apply button is pressed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because there are two items associated with the ALT+A key combination:

  • The "Apply the new color settings without restarting" option.
  • The Apply button.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use the appropriate method:


Use the Mouse

If you can use the mouse or another pointing device, click Apply or "Apply the new color settings without restarting" as appropriate.


Use the Keyboard

If you cannot use the mouse or another pointing device, and you want to click Apply, press the TAB key until the Apply button has the focus (has a dotted-line box around it), and then press ENTER. If you cannot use the mouse or another pointing device, and you want to click "Apply the new color settings without restarting," follow these steps:

  1. Press the TAB key until one of the "After I change color settings" options has the focus (has a dotted-line box around it).
  2. Press UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW to select "Apply the new color settings without restarting."

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 98.
