SYMPTOMS

When you try to use the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) "/whois" command, you may experience one of the following symptoms:

Microsoft Chat versions 2.0, 2.1

You may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Chat does not support IRC / commands (yet anyway).

Microsoft Chat version 2.5

The Chat program may appear to stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur in Chat versions 2.0 and 2.1 because these versions do not support the IRC command /whois. In Microsoft Chat version 2.5, the Chat program does not respond until the /whois command is finished.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method:

Microsoft Chat versions 2.0, 2.1

Upgrade to Chat version 2.5. For information about how to do so, view the following Microsoft Web site:

Microsoft Chat version 2.5

If you are already running Chat version 2.5 and the program appears to hang when you use the /whois command, wait until the command is completely finished to determine if the program is experiencing a normal pause during a download procedure, or if there is another issue.
