Error: "Cannot Open Obj.conf": No Such File or Directory (192631)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft FrontPage 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q192631

SYMPTOMS

When you install the FrontPage 98 Server Extensions to a Netscape Web server running on a Windows NT Server computer, the following error message occurs:
Cannot open "c:\frontpage\config\obj.conf": no such file or directory
The installation fails after you clear this message.

CAUSE

This error occurs when you point to an incorrect configuration file when you install the FrontPage 98 Server Extensions.

RESOLUTION

When you are prompted for the "Server Config:," enter the full path to the Netscape server's Magnus.conf file.

The location of this file will vary depending on your version of Netscape's Web server and the location that you specified when installing the Netscape Web server.

For more information on locating your server's Magnus.conf file, please see your Web server's documentation or contact Netscape.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in FrontPage 98 for Windows.

The third-party products discussed here are manufactured by vendors independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding these products' performance or reliability.

MORE INFORMATION

The configuration file that the FrontPage Server Extensions search for on a Netscape Server is the Magnus.conf file. If any other .cnf or .conf files are input during the installation of the FrontPage Server Extensions, you will receive the error described in the SYMPTOMS section of this article.

If the FrontPage Personal Web Server is installed, then by default, the FrontPage Server Extensions search in the FrontPage Personal Web Server's configuration directory (C:\FrontPage Webs\server\conf) for the required configuration file.

The files listed when you first select the Browse button are the Access.cnf, Httpd.cnf, and Srm.cnf files. None of these files are the correct configuration file for the Netscape Server. The required file is the Magnus.conf, which is associated with your Netscape Server.
