XL98: Cannot Initialize Spelling Checker (192608)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to check the spelling of your worksheet, you may receive the following error message:
Cannot initialize spelling checker.

CAUSE

This error message occurs when you move or rename the Proofing Tools folder of Microsoft Office.

The spelling tools are installed in the following folder:
   Macintosh HD:Microsoft Office 98:Shared Applications:Proofing Tools
				
If you move or rename this folder or the files in it, you will receive the error message described in the "Symptoms" section and you will be unable to check the spelling of your document.

RESOLUTION

If you have moved the Proofing Tools folder out of the Shared Applications folder of Microsoft Office 98, move the folder back to this default location, which is:
   Macintosh HD:Microsoft Office 98:Shared Applications
				
-or-

If you have renamed the Proofing Tools folder to another folder name, rename the folder back to the name Proofing Tools.

-or-

Run the Microsoft Office Installer and reinstall Office.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
