OL98: (CW) Minimizing Duplicate or Conflicting Appointments (192476)

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate Workgroup/Other option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate" if you have the Corporate Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

When you use multiple computers to access the same Microsoft Exchange Server mailbox, conflicting and/or duplicate calendar entries may occur.

RESOLUTION

Choose the appropriate resolution below and apply it to your secondary computer(s).

If You Have Duplicate Appointments

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Preferences tab, click E-mail Options.
  3. Click Advanced E-mail Options.
  4. Click to clear "Process requests and responses on arrival."
  5. Click OK and OK.

Conflicts with Appointments or Meetings with Reminders

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Other tab, and then click Advanced Options.
  3. Click Reminder Options.
  4. Click to clear Display The Reminder.
  5. Click OK three times to close the Options.

You have multiple computers that, in essence, create duplicate items in their own Primary Offline Calendar and then propagate the duplicate items to the Microsoft Exchange Server mailbox.

A similar occurrence exists with appointments that are in a conflicted state and must be resolved by the user. The reminders display on more than one computer, and when dismissed or postponed, cause two instances of the same appointment, each with their own reminder data. This requires manual reconciliation.

By clearing these options on the less-used of your computers, you eliminate the processing of items or reminders firing, thereby preventing these problems from occurring.
