PRJ98: Incorrectly Distributed Timephased Baseline Cost or Work (192388)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q192388

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you view baseline information in the Task Usage view or Resource Usage view, timephased baseline work and costs may not be distributed over periods of working time outside of 8 A.M. to 5 P.M.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when all of the following conditions are true:

  1. You create a project in Microsoft Project 4.0 where the project calendar's working hours are partially outside the time range of 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. (for example, 4:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.).
  2. You save the project's baseline in the Microsoft Project 4.0.
  3. You open the project in Microsoft Project 98.

WORKAROUND

To correct this problem, edit the timephased Baseline Cost and Baseline Work values in the Task Usage or Resource Usage views to reflect the distribution that you want.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior occurs only with the timephased Baseline Cost and Baseline Work fields as viewed in Task Usage or Resource Usage view. Furthermore, the effects are visible only when the timescale is set to display units in hours (or smaller).

When you create a project in Microsoft Project 4.0 based on the default Standard calendar and then import the project into Microsoft Project 98, baseline information is converted based on standard working hours of 8 A.M. to 12 P.M. and 1 P.M. to 5 P.M. Any calendar exceptions are ignored, and the following rules are applied:

  1. Baseline Work for periods entirely outside of standard working hours are spread evenly between Baseline Start and Baseline Finish.
  2. Baseline Work for periods entirely within standard working hours are spread evenly between Baseline Start and Baseline Finish.
  3. Baseline Work for periods that begin before and finish during standard working hours are spread evenly between 8 A.M. and Baseline Finish.
  4. Baseline Work for periods that begin during and finish after standard working hours are spread evenly between Baseline Start and 5:00 P.M.
  5. Baseline Work for periods that begin before and finish after standard working hours are be spread evenly between 8 A.M. and 5 P.M.
