This article was previously published under Q192076 SYMPTOMS
In Word 2000, the keystroke combination ALT+F4 does not close all document windows and quit Word as it did in previous versions. Instead, it closes one window at a time and quits Word when the last document is closed.
CAUSE
The ALT+F4 keystroke combination is assigned to the FileCloseOrExit command, which closes all of the windows of the active document one at time.
WORKAROUND
To reassign the ALT+F4 keystroke combination to the FileExit command, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Customize.
- Click Keyboard at the bottom of the dialog box.
- Under Commands, click FileExit.
- Click Press New Shortcut Key, and then type ALT+F4.
- Click Assign.
NOTE: Holding down the SHIFT key while selecting Exit on the File menu also closes all documents and quits Word.
MORE INFORMATION
In Word 97, the ALT+F4 keystroke combination is assigned to the FileExit command, which quits Microsoft Word and prompts you to save the open documents if the documents have changed. If the documents have not changed, it closes the documents and quits Word.
In Word 2000, the ALT+F4 keystroke combination is assigned to the FileCloseOrExit command, which closes the documents one at a time regardless of whether the document has changed or not.
