SUMMARY

This article discusses how to copy AutoCorrect entries from Microsoft Word 6.x, so that you can use them in Word 98.

MORE INFORMATION

AutoCorrect entries are stored in the Normal template. When you run Word 98 for the first time, it reads the Word 6.x Normal template, and in the process, it reads your AutoCorrect entries.

NOTE: For this process to work, you must install Word 98 to the same computer that Word 6.x is installed on.

If you remove Word 6.x from your computer before you install Word 98, you need to use one of the following methods to copy your Word 6.x AutoCorrect entries for use in Word 98.

Method 1: If You Have Not Yet Started Word 98 for the First Time

If you have not yet started Word 98 for the first time, place your Word 6.x Normal template in the following folder:

Microsoft Office 98:Templates

When you start Word 98 for the first time, it reads the AutoCorrect entries from the Word 6.x Normal template, and it incorporates those entries into then new Normal template for Word 98.

Method 2: If You Have Already Started Word 98 for the First Time

CAUTION: These steps remove any customization you have done to Word 98. If you made changes to the Normal template for Word 98, they will be lost, including keystroke changes. You may want to reconsider copying AutoCorrect entries, because by following these steps you lose information stored in the Word Settings (8) and MS Office ACL (8) files.

If you have already started Word 98 for the first time, follow these steps:
  1. Find and Delete the Word 98 Normal template.
  2. Find and Delete the Word Settings (8) file.
  3. Find and Delete the MS Office ACL (8).
  4. Move your Word 6.0 Normal template to the Microsoft Office 98:Templates folder.
  5. Start Word 98 by double-clicking the Word 98 program icon.
Word 98 builds a new Normal template based on the Word 6.0 Normal template.

NOTE: Changes that were previously stored in your Word 98 AutoCorrect list are lost. For additional information about AutoCorrect, please click the article number(s) below to view the article(s) in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
