This article was previously published under Q191740

SYMPTOMS

This article applies to Microsoft Mail Server. When you are configuring SMTP server events using the Microsoft Management Console (MMC), one of the following errors occurs:

  • When you are deleting an event, the following error message appears:
    RPC server unavailable
  • When you are editing an event, the following error message appears:
    Type mismatch
    SMTP configuration

CAUSE

The Internet Information Server (IIS) Administrator Service (iisadmin) was stopped and restarted while the MMC was running.

For example, while the MMC was running, the commands "net stop iisadmin" and "net start iisadmin" were issued from a command prompt, or the IIS Administrator Service was stopped and restarted from within Services in Control Panel.

RESOLUTION

When the IIS Administrator Service is stopped and restarted, be sure to also quit and restart the MMC.

STATUS
