DSS80: Microphone Slider Appears in Advanced Volume Settings (191659)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Advanced Volume Settings utility to adjust the audio settings for your computer, a Microphone slider may appear in the Speaker window. You are, however, unable to change the microphone settings using this slider.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 is your preferred playback device.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, adjust the microphone settings in the Master Record window. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Multimedia.
  3. Click the Audio tab.
  4. Under Recording, click the icon beside the Preferred Device box.
  5. In the Master Record window, use the Mic Balance and Volume sliders to adjust the microphone settings.
  6. Close the Master Record window.
  7. Click OK, and then close Control Panel.
