How to Add Start Menu Shortcut for ActiveMovie and Media Player (191531)

SUMMARY

Installing Microsoft Windows Media Player version 5.2 removes the shortcuts for Media Player and ActiveMovie Control from the Start menu in Windows 95 and Windows 98. Windows Media Player version 5.2 replaces ActiveMovie and Media Player as the default media file player for Windows 95 and Windows 98.

To add the ActiveMovie Control shortcut back to the Entertainment menu in Windows 98 or the Multimedia menu in Windows 95:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar & Start Menu.
  2. On the Start Menu Programs tab, click Advanced.
  3. Click the plus sign (+) next to the Programs folder to open it, and then click the plus sign next to the Accessories folder to open it.
  4. Click the Entertainment (or Multimedia) folder.
  5. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Shortcut.
  6. In the Command Line box, type the following line

    c:\<windows>\rundll32.exe amovie.ocx,RunDll

    where <windows> is your Windows folder. Note that the word "RunDll" must be capitalized exactly as shown.
  7. Click Next.
  8. In the "Select a name for the shortcut" box, type "ActiveMovie" (without quotation marks), and then click Finish.
  9. Right-click the new ActiveMovie shortcut, click Properties, and then click Change Icon.
  10. In the File Name box, type "c:\<windows>\system\amovie.ocx" (without quotation marks), where <windows> is your Windows folder, and then click OK.
  11. Click OK, and then click OK.
To add the Media Player shortcut back to the Entertainment menu in Windows 98 or the Multimedia menu in Windows 95:

  1. Follow steps 1-5 above.
  2. In the Command Line box, type the following line

    c:\<windows>\mplayer.exe

    where <windows> is your Windows folder.
  3. Click Next, and then click Finish.
