This article was previously published under Q191497

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to create a Windows 98 Startup disk using a 5.25-inch, 1.2-megabyte (MB) floppy disk, you may receive the following prompt after files are copied to the floppy disk:

Please insert a blank floppy and label this disk 1

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because creating a Windows 98 Startup disk using a 5.25-inch, 1.2-MB floppy disk is not supported.

RESOLUTION

Although creating a Windows 98 Startup disk using this type of floppy disk is not supported, it may be possible using two floppy disks. To work around this behavior, insert a second, formatted, 5.25-inch, 1.2-MB floppy disk into the floppy disk drive, and then click OK. Be sure to label this disk number two.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows 98 does not automatically format the second floppy disk in this scenario.
