How to Use This Document
To view WMS-FAX.TXT on screen in Notepad, maximize the Notepad
window.
To print WMS-FAX.TXT, open it in Notepad or another word
processor, and then use the Print command on the File menu.

WHAT IS WINDOWS MESSAGING?
Windows Messaging is an update to Exchange that was originally
shipped with Windows 95. Like Exchange, Windows Messaging enables the user to
send and receive e-mail, faxes, and documents in message format by accessing a
Microsoft Mail Postoffice Mailbox Account. Information Services that can be
used with Windows Messaging include Microsoft Mail, Internet Mail, Microsoft
Fax, and the Microsoft Network. Windows Messaging is a Full MAPI Client.
WHAT IS MICROSOFT MAIL POSTOFFICE?
Microsoft Mail Postoffice was included in Windows for Workgroups,
Windows 95, OSR2 and OSR2.5. Microsoft Mail Postoffice provides a centralized
location for Network Administrators or Small Office Administrators to create
and maintain a Workgroup Postoffice. The Administrator would create an account
for each user within the Workgroup Postoffice. This account would then provide
users the ability to send or receive e-mail to or from other users within the
company network.
WHAT IS MICROSOFT FAX?
Microsoft Fax is a faxing application that requires a Full MAPI
Client to operate, such as: Microsoft Exchange, Windows Messaging, Microsoft
Exchange Server Client or Outlook97. Microsoft Fax was originally shipped with
Windows for Workgroups as At Work Fax and later updated to Microsoft Fax and
included in Windows 95, OSR2 and OSR2.5. This is the same update and does not
include any feature changes. Microsoft Fax requires a fax modem.
INSTALLATION
WMS.EXE
Locate WMS.EXE on the Windows 98 CD ROM in
Tools\OldWin95\Messaging directory. Launch the executable by double clicking
the file or selecting the file and hitting Enter. Follow the prompts provided
by the install. If prompted to reboot when setup is completed, select OK to
allow setup to reboot and finalize settings. Once setup is finalized, first
time users will need to create a profile. You can create a new profile by
double clicking the Inbox Icon on the Desktop or selecting the Inbox Icon on
the Desktop and hitting Enter. Follow the Inbox Setup Wizard instructions.
This file installs Windows Messaging and Microsoft Mail Postoffice,
also commonly referred to as a Workgroup Postoffice. Windows Messaging is a
Full MAPI Client. WMS.EXE is provided for Microsoft Technical Support (MTS), or
Windows 95, OSR2 and OSR2.5 upgrade users to repair pre-existing Windows 95
Microsoft Exchange, OSR2 and OSR2.5 Windows Messaging clients and Microsoft
Mail Postoffice if they become corrupted. ("Pre-existing" requires that
Microsoft Exchange or Windows Messaging and Microsoft Mail Postoffice is fully
functional prior to upgrading to Windows 98.) If Microsoft Exchange or Windows
Messaging files become corrupted, this will install updated versions of those
files. WMS.EXE will add an Inbox Icon to the desktop as well as a Mail Icon and
a Microsoft Mail Postoffice Icon to Control Panel if one does not already
exist. If At Work Fax was configured in Windows For Workgroups Microsoft Mail
prior to upgrading to Windows 98, this file will remove the At Work Fax
functionality in Microsoft Mail and remove the At Work Fax Icon in Control
Panel. The Inbox Icon on the Desktop will open to Windows Messaging once a
profile has been created. The system must be able to access a Workgroup
Postoffice Account in order to create a profile.
WARNING: This file
is an updated version of Windows Messaging. However, it does not contain any
additional updates for Microsoft Mail Postoffice. This file does not contain
any feature changes to Microsoft Windows Messaging or Microsoft Mail
Postoffice. All known issues regarding Microsoft Windows Messaging and
Microsoft Mail Postoffice will be applicable to this update. This file is not
intended for use with Microsoft Exchange Server Client or Outlook 97. If errors
occur within Microsoft Exchange Server Client or Outlook 97, it is recommended
that you reinstall the original application. If it is necessary to install
WMS.EXE to restore Microsoft Mail Postoffice functionality, it is recommended
that you reinstall Microsoft Exchange Server Client or Outlook 97 after WMS.EXE
install is complete.
AWFAX.EXE
Locate AWFAX.EXE
on the Windows 98 CD ROM in Tools\OldWin95\Messaging directory. Launch the
executable by double clicking the file or selecting the file and hitting Enter.
Follow the prompts provided by the install. Setup will prompt you to reboot
when setup is completed, select OK to allow setup to reboot and finalize
settings. Add Microsoft Fax as a service in the MAPI Client Profile through the
Mail and Fax Icon in Control Panel.
AWFAX.EXE installs Microsoft
Fax. Microsoft Fax requires a Full MAPI Client in order to function, such as:
Microsoft Exchange, Windows Messaging, Microsoft Exchange Server Client or
Outlook 97. AWFAX.EXE is provided for Microsoft Technical Support (MTS) or
Windows 95, OSR2 and OSR2.5 upgrade users to repair a pre-existing Microsoft
Fax installation if it becomes corrupted. ("Pre-existing" requires that
Microsoft Fax be fully functional prior to upgrading to Windows 98.) If
Microsoft Fax files become corrupted, this will install updated versions of
those files. AWFAX.EXE will add a Microsoft Fax Printer into the Printers
Folder if one does not already exist. If At Work Fax was configured in Windows
For Workgroups Microsoft Mail prior to upgrading to Windows 98, this file will
remove the At Work Fax functionality in Microsoft Mail and remove the At Work
Fax Icon in Control Panel. Microsoft Fax must be an added service to the MAPI
Client Profile in order to function.
WARNING: This file does not
contain any feature changes to Microsoft Fax. All known issues regarding
Microsoft Fax will be applicable to this update.
In order for
Microsoft Fax to answer an incoming call and receive a fax, the MAPI Client
must be launched and running.
UNINSTALLATION
To uninstall any of these packages go to Control Panel and double
click Add/Remove Programs. The component will be listed on the first tab,
Install/Uninstall. Select the package you wish to uninstall and click on the
Add/Remove Button.
USING WINDOWS MESSAGING WITH MICROSOFT SCHEDULE+ 1.0
Windows Messaging is designed to work with Microsoft Schedule+
7.0. When Windows Messaging is installed, it will partially disable Microsoft
Schedule+ 1.0. You will still be able to use Microsoft Schedule+ 1.0 in
standalone mode, but you will not be able to send or receive meeting requests.
You will see an error message when starting Microsoft Schedule+ 1.0 that
notifies you that the mail spooler cannot be started. Click Yes to continue,
and Microsoft Schedule+ 1.0 will continue.
Microsoft Schedule+ is
disabled by changing Mailspl.exe to Mailspl.bak and by putting a
StartupOffline=1 line into Schdplus.ini.
NOTE: There is no message
warning you that these changes are made.
USING WINDOWS MESSAGING WITH MICROSOFT MAIL
Windows Messaging is designed to replace the Microsoft Mail
program that comes with Windows for Workgroups and Microsoft Mail version 3.x.
WMS.EXE contains the MMF Converter to allow you to import your Microsoft Mail
messages into Windows Messaging.
TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS
If you experience problems connecting to your Microsoft Mail
Postoffice, please ensure you have network access to your postoffice. You can
also get diagnostic details about the reason for failures from within Windows
Messaging by clicking the Tools menu, clicking Microsoft Mail Tools, and then
clicking View Session Log.
If you experience a problem composing or
reading a message that produces an error saying "Can't launch form," then the
forms file may be corrupt. To correct this problem, quit Windows Messaging, and
then go to your {Windows}\Forms directory and delete Frmcache.dat. From
{Windows}\Forms, copy the file Frmcache.bak to Frmcache.dat, and restart
Windows Messaging.
Some Microsoft Mail 3.x extensions are not
compatible with Windows Messaging--for example, WinRules and Conference+.
Windows Messaging automatically disables some of these extensions to prevent
system problems. If a Microsoft Mail 3.x extension is causing a problem, it can
be disabled by placing a ';' in front of the corresponding line in Msmail.ini.
Contact the product vendors for further information.
If you
experience a problem where messages are stuck in the Outbox, it is possible
that the wrong information service is trying to process the message. To correct
the problem, click the Tools menu, click Options, click Delivery, and then
ensure the information services are listed in the order you want them.
After quitting Windows Messaging, you may notice that MAPISP32 is
still running. MAPISP32 continues to run for 20 seconds after you quit Windows
Messaging.
E-forms created with the Microsoft Electronic Forms
Designer do not open correctly when saved in the .msg file format. Transfer the
.msg file from the file system to the Inbox to open the e-form correctly.
If clicking Send on the File command in Lotus Approach does not
work, please ensure that you have a file called Msmail.ini in your {Windows}\
directory. If the file does not exist, just create an empty file with that
name.
Two clients using Microsoft Mail should not be run against the
same Microsoft Mail Postoffice mailbox. This configuration is not supported.
