Sierra Semiconductor 33.6 Modem Does Not Work Correctly (191422)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use your Sierra Semiconductor 33.6 modem to connect to another computer, you may receive an "Error 630" error message, and your modem may not connect successfully. Note that this behavior may not occur in every program that uses your modem.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because the Sierra Semiconductor 33.6 modem driver provided by Sierra Semiconductor is not totally compatible with Windows 98.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, configure your modem to use the Sierra 28800 PnP SQ3456 modem driver. Note that if you use this work around, your modem will operate at a slower speed than normal. To configure your modem to use the Sierra 28800 PnP SQ3465 modem driver, use the following steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
  2. Click the Device Manager tab, double-click the Modem branch to expand it, click your Sierra modem, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Driver tab, click Update Driver, and then click "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want."
  4. In the Manufacturer's box, click Sierra Semiconductor, click Sierra 28800 PnP SQ3456 in the Models box, and then click Next.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish installing the driver.
