SYMPTOMS

When recording an Add Shares transaction in an investment account, you are unable to record a commission or other charge. If you try to add a commission amount to the Total field you receive the following message:

Enter a price and quantity and let Money fill the total. If you want to record a commission as well, use the Buy transaction.

CAUSE

The Add Shares transaction type does not support commissions or other charges; therefore, for such transactions the Total field always equals the price times the quantity. This behavior is by design of Microsoft Money.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods:

Use a Buy transaction instead of an Add Shares transaction if you need to record a commission or similar charge.

-or-

In addition to the Add shares transaction, create an Other Expense transaction with the same date. Then put a note in the Memo field stating what the expense is for, in this case adding shares.

MORE INFORMATION

You would use the Add Shares transaction if you don't have investment purchase records, or if you've bought several lots of an investment and don't want to enter the whole history of purchases.
