This article was previously published under Q191257 SYMPTOMS
When you try to install Windows 98, your computer may stop responding
(hang). Also, if you run Setup again, Setup may not play sounds during the
setup process.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if Setup is unable to play a test sound file. If
Setup is unable to play a test sound file, it does not play sounds during
subsequent Setup attempts.
MORE INFORMATION
This behavior may be related to sound problems present before you ran
Setup.
Windows 98 Setup uses the first sound as a test. If the test causes your
computer to stop responding (hang), the following registry key prevents
Setup from playing sounds the next time you run Setup:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\NoMusic
