PUB98: Can Print Only Four Custom Business Cards (191134)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 98

This article was previously published under Q191134

SYMPTOMS

When you create a custom business card using the Blank Business Card template, and attempt to print multiple business cards per page, only four cards are printed per page.

CAUSE

The Blank Business Card template defaults to four cards per page. This behavior is different from business cards based on the Business Card Wizard, which by default prints ten cards per page.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: If You Want to Create a New Business Card

Create your business cards based on the Blank Business Card Wizard rather than the template. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click New.
  2. Click the Publications By Wizard tab.
  3. Click Business Cards, select the Business Card style you want to use, and then click Start Wizard.
After the wizard creates your business card, delete any objects you do not want and add any new objects you want to use.

Method 2: If You Want to Modify an Exiting Business Card

If you have a publication based on the Blank Business Card template, you may need to manually define the gaps and margins to print multiple business cards. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Determine the margins and gaps used by the Blank Business Card Wizard. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. On the File menu, click New.
    2. Click the Publications By Wizard tab.
    3. Click Business Cards, select the Business Card style you want to use, and then click Start Wizard.
    4. On the File menu, click Print.
    5. In the Print dialog box, click Page Options.
    6. Click Custom Options.
    7. Note the Side Margin, Top Margin, Horizontal Gap, and Vertical Gap values.
    8. Close the publication based on the Wizard. You do not need to save the changes.
  2. Open your business card publication and perform the following steps:

    1. On the File menu, click Print.
    2. In the Print dialog box, click Page Options.
    3. Click Custom Options.
    4. Replace the Side Margin, Top Margin, Horizontal Gap, and Vertical Gap values with the values you noted in step g above.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

To use the Business Card wizard to create a business card, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click New.
  2. Click the Publications By Wizard tab.
  3. Click Business Cards, select the Business Card style you want to use, and then click Start Wizard.
  4. From the Business Card Wizard - Print Tiling panel, click "Several tiled on the page. Click Finish.
Publisher attempts to fit as many business cards on the page, including the crop marks. If you click to clear the Print Crop Marks option in the Print dialog box, you should have a ten-card layout.

If you use this method, the gaps and margins will not match those used by the Business Card Wizard. The following table shows the differences between these two methods:
Type of Spacing Using the Wizard Using Blank Card
   ---------------------------------------------------------------------

   Side Margin 0.75" 0.37"
   Top Margin 0.5" 0.1"
   Horizontal Gap 0" 0.75"
   Vertical Gap 0" 0.2"
