Computer Hibernates When Standby Is Pressed (190715)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 98

This article was previously published under Q190715

SYMPTOMS

On a computer that conforms to the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) specification, if you select the Standby action for the power button on the Advanced tab of the Power Management tool in Control Panel, and you press the power button, the computer may hibernate instead of standing by.

Likewise, if you select Standby as the action taken when the lid of the portable computer is closed, the computer may hibernate instead of standing by when the lid is closed.

In addition, if you click Start, click Shut Down, and then click Stand By, the computer may hibernate instead of standing by.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur on ACPI-compliant computers if the Enable Hibernation Support option is enabled on the Hibernate tab in the Power Management tool in Control Panel. Under this configuration, Windows 98 causes the computer to hibernate instead of standing by when you press the power button.

This problem was corrected in Windows 98 Second Edition.

MORE INFORMATION

The Hibernate tab appears in Power Management properties only if the computer is configured to support hibernation. To determine whether your computer supports hibernation and how to enable that support, please consult your computer's documentation or manufacturer.

With this hotfix installed, the computer behaves as follows:
  • When you click Start, click Shut Down, and then click Stand By, the computer goes into Stand By mode.
  • When you select Stand By as the action to perform when you press the power button or when you close the lid, the computer goes into Stand By mode.
  • When you enable Hibernation, to perform when you press the power button or when you close the lid, the computer goes into Hibernate mode.
Without this hotfix installed, to put the computer in Hibernation, click Start, click Shut Down, and then click Stand By. This hotfix effectively disables this specific method of causing the computer to hibernate.

Windows 98 Second Edition behaves the same way as Windows 98 with this hotfix installed.
