XL98: LINEST Function Returning Only One Value (190632)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q190632

SYMPTOMS

The LINEST worksheet function returns one value (the slope) when multiple values should be returned.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when one cell is selected when you type the LINEST formula, and press COMMAND+RETURN.

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Excel.

RESOLUTION

To return the additional regression statistics, select a range of cells consisting of n columns (where n represents the number of known x's) and 5 rows.

NOTE: Because LINEST is an array formula, you must enter the function as an array. To do this, press COMMAND+RETURN in Microsoft Excel to enter the function as an array.

MORE INFORMATION

The syntax of the LINEST function is

=LINEST(known_y's,known_x's)

where "known_y's" and "known_x's" are ranges on the worksheet containing the y-values and the x-values, respectively.

REFERENCES

For more information about the LINEST worksheet function, click Contents And Index on the Help menu (or on the Balloon Help menu if you are using a version of the Macintosh operating system earlier than 8.0), click the Index button in Microsoft Excel Help, type the following text
