External Virtual Directory in Root Web Makes -1 File Size (190514)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft FrontPage 97 for Windows with Bonus Pack

This article was previously published under Q190514

SYMPTOMS

When you try to publish to a FrontPage Web on the server, a file appears with no name or any other information except that its size is -1.

A document or documents appear when you are using the browser but the documents are unseen when using FrontPage Explorer.

CAUSE

A virtual directory or script alias has been created that points outside the Web content area and shares a name with an actual folder inside the Web content area. The actual folder contains one or more HTML documents.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, do the following:

  1. Locate the virtual directory or script alias that shares a name with a folder in the Web content area and is pointing outside of the Web content area.

The virtual directory or script alias will point to a file folder outside the Web content area. (For Internet Information Server, the default content area is c:\inetpub\wwwroot.) For IIS version 2.0 or 3.0, virtual directories can be displayed by selecting the properties for the WWW service in Internet Service Manager and then selecting the Directories tab.
  2. Remove the virtual directory or script alias from the list of directories or aliases included in the server's content area.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft FrontPage 97 for Windows. This issue is resolved in FrontPage 98 for Windows.
