PRB: DLC Protocol Is Not Supported by Microsoft Cluster Server 1.0 (189986)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition 4.0

This article was previously published under Q189986

SYMPTOMS

When you try to make a DLC printer a failover resource in MSCS, a print job might hang in the spooler and cause other unexpected behaviors.

CAUSE

Microsoft Cluster Server only supports failover of the TCP/IP protocol because of its ability to flush the Mac address. The DLC protocol talks directly to the card in the printer and cannot be flushed during a failover.

RESOLUTION

Do not install the DLC protocol on a computer that needs to failover a printer that does not support the TCPIP protocol.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
