PPT98: Memory Requirements for PowerPoint 98 (188746)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition
This article was previously published under Q188746 SUMMARY
When using Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition you need to ensure that
sufficient memory is allocated to PowerPoint. If you do not have sufficient
memory allocated to PowerPoint, you may experience unexpected behavior when
printing and viewing a presentation.
This article lists the memory requirements for PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition.
MORE INFORMATION
The following table lists the absolute minimum and recommended minimum memory
requirements for PowerPoint 98, based on whether Virtual Memory is turned on or
off.
Virtual Absolute Recommended
Memory Minimum Minimum
-------------------------------------------------------------
ON ~4096K ~10240K
OFF ~8595K ~14739K
PowerPoint is a RAM-based program, meaning that when a presentation
file is opened, the entire file is loaded into program memory. Because
of this, the amount of memory allocated should accommodate the full file
size. There should also be enough additional memory available to display
the presentation images for other views, such as the slide show or slide
sorter. Finally, there must be a minimum amount of memory available to
run PowerPoint itself.
You can use the following formula as a guideline in determining how much memory
is needed to load a particular presentation:
1.5X + A = K
K = Total Kilobytes of RAM you need to allocate to PowerPoint.
X = The size in kilobytes of your PowerPoint presentation file.
A = The kilobyte amount needed to start PowerPoint.
NOTE: If the presentation contains large scanned images or other bitmaps,
increase the multiplier from 1.5X to 2X. For example, if a presentation
containing large imported bitmaps occupies 2500K of disk space, you need at
least 9096K of memory allocated to PowerPoint. To determine this, use the
following formula:
(2 * 2500K) + 4096K = 9096K
You can adjust the amount of memory set aside for a program in the Get
Info dialog box. For more information about memory allocation on the Macintosh,
see the Macintosh system software documentation.
