The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Plus! 98

This article was previously published under Q188241

SYMPTOMS

When you install Plus! 98, some McAfee Anti-Virus device drivers may not load, and you may receive an error message.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if you install McAfee VirusScan included with Plus! 98 over an existing installation of McAfee Anti-Virus version 3.1.6 for Microsoft Windows 3.x.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, remove the references to McAfee Anti-Virus in the System.ini and Win.ini files. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information.
  2. On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.
  3. On the System.ini tab, double-click the [386Enh] folder, and then click the following check boxes to clear them:

    Device=mcfshook.386
    Device=mckrnl.386
    Device=mcscan32.386
    Device=mcutil.386
    Device=vshield.386

  4. Click the Win.ini tab, double-click the [Windows] folder, and then click the Load= check box to clear it.

    NOTE: If you want some programs to load from the Load= line in the Win.ini file, you can edit the Load= line and remove the following entry:

    C:\Mcafee\Viruscan\Vshwin.exe

  5. Click OK, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
If the issue is resolved, you may want to use System Configuration Editor (Sysedit.exe) to delete the lines you disabled in steps 3 and 4.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Plus! 98 version 1.0.
