SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Wallet, you may experience the following symptoms:
  • When you attempt to use a Web page that supports Microsoft Wallet, your address may not appear on the Web page.
  • When you attempt to view credit card information in Microsoft Wallet, you may receive the following error message:
The billing address used for this credit card has been deleted.
Please choose a new billing address.
When you attempt to choose a new billing address, the addresses stored in the Windows Address Book (WAB) are not available. If you click New Address, you can add a new address, but when you attempt to use Microsoft Wallet, the same behavior occurs.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you install Microsoft Outlook 98 on your computer after you install Microsoft Wallet.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, disable data sharing. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the open box, Type "wab" (without quotation marks), and then click OK.
  3. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  4. Click "Do not share information among Microsoft Outlook and other applications. Address book data will be stored in an Address Book
(*.wab) file," click OK, and then close the Windows Address Book.

Note that since the Windows Address Book no longer shares data with Outlook's Address Book, it may be necessary to type contact information in both the Windows Address Book and the Outlook Address Book for it to be available in all programs.

MORE INFORMATION

When Outlook 98 is installed, it modifies the Windows Address Book to share information. When this occurs, Microsoft Wallet can not reliably read the address information from the Windows Address Book. Disabling data sharing allows Microsoft Wallet to read the Windows Address Book properly.

Programs that use the Windows Address Book include Outlook Express and Internet Explorer. Most programs, including Microsoft Office programs, are not affected by disabling data sharing. Microsoft Office programs use the Outlook Address Book, which is the default Simple messaging application programming interface (MAPI) address book.

Outlook Express uses the Windows Address Book exclusively. If you are using Outlook Express you must type contact information into both the Windows Address Book and Outlook 98's Address Book to ensure all addresses are available to all programs.

In Internet Explorer, when you click Address Book on the Go menu, the Windows Address Book is opened. To open the Outlook Address Book, click Mail on the Go menu to open a new message, and then choose Address Book from within Outlook 98.
