This article was previously published under Q188177 SYMPTOMS
When you upgrade Microsoft Windows 95 to Windows 98 using the "setup /p"
command with additional detection switches, you may receive the following
error message:
Detection returned the following error: Invalid parameter while calling
Detection Manager API.
When Setup is completed, only Dial-Up Adapter may appear in Device Manager.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you use an invalid detection switch with the
"setup /p" command. An invalid detection switch prevents hardware
detection from being run during Setup.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, run the Add New Hardware wizard in Windows 98.
To do so, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add New Hardware, and then follow the instructions on your
screen.
MORE INFORMATION
This behavior does not occur in Windows 95 because Windows 95 Setup runs
hardware detection before files are copied. Windows 98 runs hardware
detection after your computer is restarted for the first time.
