Cannot Capture DVD Video Image By Pressing PRINT SCREEN Key (188088)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 98
- Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
This article was previously published under Q188088 SYMPTOMS
If you attempt to capture a still image of a digital video disc (DVD) movie by pressing the PRINT SCREEN key and then pasting the image into a program, only a blue or black box may be pasted into the program.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs for the following reasons:
- The DVD data stream is decoded by the DVD decoder card and then redirected back to the video adapter. On computers that use an external patch cable, the video stream is sent from the video adapter to the DVD decoder card, and then directly to the monitor as an overlay. This is done to improve the playback performance of DVD video by bypassing slower portions of the subsystem. Because the DVD data stream does not pass through the Windows API layer, the video output cannot be captured and you only capture the playback area in which the movie is displayed.
- This is a functionality of DVD security which is designed to make it difficult to copy DVD movies illegally.
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
