XL98: Type 1 Error Starting Excel with Period as Hard Drive Name (188083)

When you start Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, you may receive the
following error:
The application "Microsoft Excel" has unexpectedly quit, because an
error of Type 1 occurred.
You should save your work in other open applications and restart the
computer.
CAUSE
You may receive this error if either of the following are true:
- The name of your hard disk drive is a period (.)
-or-
- The name of your hard disk drive begins with a period (.)
RESOLUTION
To start Microsoft Excel successfully, rename your hard disk drive so that
it does not begin with a period (.).
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 98
Macintosh Edition.
