Plus! 98: Desktop Themes Tool or Features Missing (187981)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to select a new desktop theme, you may experience any of the following symptoms:
  • The Desktop Themes tool in Control Panel may be missing.

  • Desktop wallpaper for Active Desktop themes may not be displayed in the Preview box in the Desktop Themes tool in Control Panel or on the screen when you click OK or Apply.

  • The Rotate Theme Monthly check box in the Desktop Themes tool in Control Panel may be missing.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you add or remove the desktop themes included in Microsoft Windows 98 after you install Plus! 98. NOTE: The Rotate Theme Monthly feature is not included in Microsoft Windows 98. This feature is included in Plus! 98.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, uninstall the desktop themes included in Plus! 98, add or remove the desktop themes included in Windows 98, and then reinstall the Desktop Themes included in Plus! 98. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Uninstall the Desktop Themes included in Plus! 98. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. Insert the Plus! 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key to prevent Plus! 98 Setup from starting automatically.
    2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    4. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Plus! 98, and then click Add/Remove.
    5. Click Add/Remove, and then click Next.
    6. Click the Desktop Themes check box to clear it, and then click Next.
    7. Click Next, and then click Finish.
    8. Click OK.
  2. Add or remove the desktop themes included in Windows 98. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key to prevent Windows 98 Setup from starting automatically.
    2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    4. Click the Windows Setup tab.
    5. If you want to add the desktop themes included in Windows 98, click the Desktop Themes check box to select it. If you want to remove the desktop themes included in Windows 98, click the Desktop Themes check box to clear it.
    6. Click OK, and then click OK.
    7. If you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.
  3. Reinstall the Desktop Themes included in Plus! 98. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Insert the Plus! 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key to prevent Plus! 98 Setup from starting automatically.
    2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    4. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Plus! 98, and then click Add/Remove.
    5. Click Add/Remove, and then click Next.
    6. Click the Desktop Themes check box to select it, and then click Next.
    7. Click Next.
    8. Click the Configure Your Desktop Theme check box to select it, and then click Finish.
    9. In the Theme box, click the desktop theme you want to use, and then click OK.
    10. Click OK.
